According to reports by foreign media, Qualcomm, a global mobile-phone chip conglomerate, will release the latest generation of mobile phone processor Snapdragon 8150 chip in December, which is comparable to other mobile phone processor chips like Apple A12, HiSilicon Kirin 980, and MediaTek Helio series. The new chip will target Chinese and Korean series rather than Apple mobile phone customers, so the competition between MediaTek and Qualcomm should intensify the Taiwanese semiconductor industry. As for TSMC, it is going to receive orders for 8150 wafers, adding an additional client for 7nm processing.

According to reports by two foreign media reports, GSM Arena and Firstpost, Qualcomm will release the latest processor chip of its flagship mobile phone processor chip Snapdragon 8150 in December of this year. Without any previous arrangement, many technology websites have carried out detailed descriptions about the specifications regarding Snapdragon 8150. The processor chip uses four high-efficiency cores with another four high-efficiency cores configured as an eight-core processor, namely the Cortex-A75 and Cortex-A55 semi-customized core.

The four low-power consumption Kryo Silver cores feature 128KB secondary high-speed memory, and its core speed reaches 1.8GHz. The other three Kryo Gold cores feature 256KB secondary high-speed memory with a maximum operating speed of 2.419GHz. As for the single Kryo Gold core, it has twice of L2 512KB memory and a maximum frequency of 2.842Ghz. Furthermore, Snapdragon 8150 has also adopted LTE technology to handle future 5G trends. It can be additionally equipped with a 5G modem chip to support a 5G network.

Foreign media also point out that the chip will be produced by the 7nm advanced process of TSMC. Although it was previously expected that the orders of the Qualcomm processor chip will be returned to TSMC from Samsung, the more we observe, it is rather convincing that TSMC can, with its leading 7nm technology and its yield rate, snatch up major orders from Qualcomm processors and modem chips in advance.

However, the competitive pressure is likely to be intensified for MediaTek as  Qualcomm Snapdragon 8150 is targeting mobile phones of Chinese brands, as well as Samsung mobile phone customers. In the past, with the exception of Huawei and some Samsung mobile phones that do not use Qualcomm chips, all others have adopted Qualcomm chips such as Mi, OPPO, and VIVO. As a result, these foreign media indicate that when the model of a chip is marketed, Mi 9 and Samsung Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy S10 are expected to be equipped with it, which should take up the market of MediaTek in China.
