Breaking Nvidia's Monopoly? 6 Major Tech Giants Developing In-House AI Chips in Unison
Date: 2023-10-20
News Type:
News briefing
Six major tech companies, including Microsoft, OpenAI, Tesla, Google, Amazon, and Meta, are developing their own AI chips. They are expected to compete with Nvidia's flagship microprocessor, the H100 GPU, and potentially help reduce costs and decrease reliance on Nvidia's AI chips.
Impact analysis
Since Nvidia entered the AI field and gained dominance, its competitors have all accelerated their research and development efforts. In addition to the six companies mentioned above, major chip manufacturers like Qualcomm, Intel, AMD, and MediaTek are also actively developing proprietary technologies, hoping to grab a share of the rapidly growing AI chip market.
While it's hard to say at this stage who can break Nvidia's dominance in the competitive landscape, one thing is certain: as the market continues to expand, there won't be just one company that can provide AI chip solutions and meet market demands in terms of performance.
From another perspective, as more companies can provide AI chips, it means that AI applications, which were originally the focus of different fields, will branch out from their original domains, expanding into areas such as automotive, industrial, consumer, and more. Although AI is essentially just algorithms, its high-intensity computational demands will lead to spec upgrades in both chips and system products.
For Taiwanese PCB manufacturers, upgrading system specifications will be a key driver for increasing value, especially as the momentum in the smartphone and 5G sectors gradually weakens. In the coming years, AI may have the opportunity to take the lead, and its catalytic effect could be similar to the early stages of 5G development, providing the impetus for high-value development from chips to entire systems in products once again.
