US President Trump publicly cried out that United States should speed up the pace of setting up 5G networks. As countries around the world accelerate the deployment of 5G networks, analysts have indicated that the industrial supply chain structure of 5G in Taiwan is complete, and it is likely to be benefited from and obtain a portion of the market opportunities. Trump recently spoke in a briefing as accompanied by the chairman of Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Ajit Pai, saying that 5G in the US should be led by private companies and they should accelerate the pace of setting up 5G networks.

According to the statistics by institutes and corporations, there are already 5 countries respectively as the UK, Latvia, Ireland, Spain, and South Korea that have completed 5G spectrum auctions by August 2018. Besides, 89 cases of 5G related spectrum auctions were carried out in 2018, and it is expected that there will be 28 more cases of related spectrum auctions to be conducted from 2019 to 2021.

The research institute, IHS, estimates that the industrial value chain alone for 5G by 2035 will have an output value of US$3.5 trillion dollars, generating 22 million jobs. In addition, it will also create as high as US$12.3 trillion dollars of products and services.

Analyst Wang Chao-li has pointed out that Taiwan has already had such technologies for mobile phones, chips, small base stations, servers, and others, furnished with comprehensive structure of industrial supply chain. For the moment, related companies of 5G operators include TSMC, MediaTek, Sercomm, Foxconn, WNC, Accton, MTI, U-media, Iteq, and UMT and others are expected to cut a share in 5G business opportunities.

IHS expects that by 2035 the overall industrial value chain of 5G is likely to create an output value of more than NT$4 trillion, and generated 510,000 jobs.

Among them, revenue of Iteq will benefit from the issue of base station construction for 5G this year, while institute investors estimate that the revenue proportion from related products revenue of 5G with Iteq should reach 10%. As for MediaTek, its first 5G data processor chip, M70, will be launched in the first half of this year. By the end of this year, it will further introduce a system single chip that integrates 5G data chips, vying for the business opportunities of 5G equipment replacement in 2020. For Sercomm that has been developing small base station technology far more than 10 years, its revenue is reckoned as the indicator with regard to technology and shipment volume of Taiwanese small and medium-sized base stations. As for WNC and U-media, they are 5G partners to American 5G telecommunications operator, Verizon. (News source: Economic Daily News)
