Ming-Chi Kuo, Deputy General Manager of the Research and Strategy Department of Tianfeng Securities Co., Ltd, has expressed optimism regarding PI (polyimide) films, one of the key materials for flexible PCBs. Under the circumstances, the major suppliers are not significantly expanding production resulting in a downstream in production, whilst consumption has continued to rise, PI films are likely to be in short supply until 2020. The legal person is optimistic that Taimide Tech., one of the world’s top four PI film suppliers, will enjoy the greatest benefits. Taimide Tech. revealed on July 30 that its view on the Q3 traditional peak season has not changed, and its production lines in July and August are in full operation.

Ming-Chi Kuo believes that the continued increase in demand for PI films is due to new applications such as flexible, rigid and composite PCBs, wireless charging, etc. However, DuPont and Korean PI film suppliers are yet to increase production capacity, and because the 5G new product designs have spurred demand on heat dissipation, it is exhausting the production capacity of graphite films that used to sinter on PI films, thereby leading to a tighter supply of PI films and causing them to be in short supply until 2020.

PI films were previously used in the aerospace industry during the Cold War between the US and Soviet Union due to their excellent insulation properties. In recent years, following the penetration of semiconductor, optoelectronic and flexible PCB applications into the Internet of Things (IoT), smart phones, innovative devices, and other diversified industries, no alternative materials have been temporarily available to replace PI films, thus helping them become the market’s new hottest sellers.
