According to Counterpoint Research, driven by government incentives, strong domestic demand, and increasing digital literacy, the production of mobile phones "Made in India" has exceeded 2 billion units from 2014 to 2022, achieving a compound annual growth rate of 23%. India has also become the world's second-largest mobile phone manufacturing country.

Impact analysis

The "Make in India" initiative, launched by the Indian government in 2014, differs from other Southeast Asian countries in its strategic focus on the development of smartphones in the realm of information and communication technology products. The strategy began with the assembly of complete devices and subsequently promoted the local production of related supply chains. In retrospect, this strategy has proven highly effective. Apart from Apple, major brands like Samsung, Xiaomi, OPPO, and VIVO have all achieved manufacturing in India. For instance, taking iPhone as an example, the increased manufacturing capacity in India has enabled the local production of newer models, including the iPhone 15 starting in 2023.

Delving further, initially, the "Make in India" smartphones primarily catered to local demand. However, with the increase in production volumes and improvement in manufacturing technology, the proportion of smartphones manufactured in India for export has been steadily rising. According to data from ICEA, in the fiscal year 2022-2023, 26% of the Indian-made smartphones were exported, which marks a significant 10-percentage-point increase from the previous fiscal year. This shift indicates that the Indian smartphone industry has moved beyond serving only the regional market and has truly become a global smartphone manufacturing powerhouse.
