The COVID-19 pandemic has seen a rise in business opportunities for long-distance applications. Dell, Hewlett-Packard, and other large notebook players are placing big orders to the major OEM manufacturers in Taiwan. This has helped the top five electronic manufacturing plants in Taiwan gain momentum for this quarter. Quanta, Compal, Wistron, and Inventec are optimistic about the volume of shipments, which is expected to render double-digit high-growth performance per quarter. Although Pegatron was affected by the pandemic in the first quarter, their factory was shut down, and goods could not be shipped out thus customer orders were postponed to the second quarter. Pegatron remains optimistic, it anticipates that the notebook shipments will be increasing by 50% to 60% per quarter and dominate the market.
There are concerns about the high volumes of orders from manufacturers in this quarter which could result in fewer orders in the peak season. However during these uncertain times of the pandemic the future is unpredictable. The general belief among the OEM plants that "If you have an order for profit now, worry about others later." Hu, Shu-Pin, Co-CEO of Asus, revealed that the current inventory level among channels is relatively low, and this positive information is expected to help the PC demand to last until the beginning of the third quarter.
Liang, Tzu-Chen, VP, and GM of Quanta stated that things are changing globally people are now working at home, remote teaching, medical care, and online services which have triggered continuous shipments for Quanta's notebook and server. He also revealed that the fierce demands this season have come not only from the United States but also from Japan and Europe. As such, no matter if it is a commercial or consumer notebook, it is anticipated that demands will continuously grow.
As for Compal, institute investors estimated the revenue this quarter will see double-digit growth in comparison with the first quarter, especially with the high demands for the commercial notebooks and applications in the education market have continued to soar. Compal still expects those shipments in the first half of this year to remain the same in comparison to the previous year.
US brands like Acer, ASUS, and other brand factories, have benefited from the increased shipments. The Inventec notebook has already reached the third quarter, and it is estimated that the quarterly growth of notebook shipments in the second quarter will reach double-digits. Besides, there is a possibility that shipments in the third quarter can maintain its peak as of that in the second quarter.
As pointed out by Wistron, it has benefited from the business opportunity of long-distance work, so that shipments of servers and laptops will achieve double-digit growth this quarter as compared to that of the first quarter. It is reported that Wistron has adjusted its shipment target higher in the second quarter as a whole, and believes it can achieve double-digit quarterly growth for notebook shipments. Furthermore, there is a chance to challenge the target of shipment of 4.5 million pieces in one single quarter. (News source: Economic Daily News)
