News briefing

TSMC and Samsung are wrestling for market share in high-end manufacturing. As pointed out by the supply chain, TSMC still has a leading advantage for the time being, while Taiwan has attracted US Applied Material, Lam Research, Kanto-PPC of Japan, RSTEC, ASML Holding of Holland, Merck, Dow, and other multinational groups to continue to successfully expand their investment in Taiwan. As relevant ecosystems have gradually expanded, the global status of Taiwan's semiconductor industry will be further enhanced.

In face of the US-China trade war, TSMC has indicated that it will slow down the pace of investment at the Nanjing Plant, although, they will continue to emphasize their technical support from the advanced process and special process of the company covering mobile communications, high-speed computing, self-driving, and loT. Moreover, TSMC has already been gearing into the field of 5G and AI, which will further initiate strong growth for semiconductors. Since TSMC technology is well furnished, it will then follow the trend to regain it’s momentum.

It is generally believed that the short-term operation of TSMC will be well maneuvered, based on the G20 to be held on June 20th in Osaka, Japan. If leaders of the US and China have reached an agreement by then, it would not only affect the short-term operation of TSMC but will also affect global economic development.

In the medium and long-term advanced process competition, TSMC is confronted with the statement spread by Samsung that it will surpass the "Gate-All-Around (GAA) technology of 3 nm by TSMC. However, the supply chain of TSMC believes that although TSMC is not yet sure about its 3-nanometer design path and the time of mass production, it is expected that the yield will be rapidly increased for 3 nm, in view of having accumulated mass production capacity and experiences in the 5nm process. Hence, it is difficult to comprehend that Samsung could have easily walked away with the major clients of TSMC as a result of the huge orders from Apple and Qualcomm; thus, TSMC should continue to maintain the leading advantage.

As noted from the statement that TSMC is planning to spend capital expenditure kept at the high level of US$10 billion to US$12 billion in the next five years, it is evident that TSMC would not spare any money in order to expand the leading edge of advanced processes.

In addition, the key global equipment and material manufacturers, including US Applied Material, Lam Research, Kanto-PPC of Japan, RSTEC, ASML Holding of Holland, Merck, Dow, and other multinational groups have successfully expanded their investment in Taiwan. Therefore, it is evident that the 3nm ecological supply chain of TSMC should continue to assemble and expand in Taiwan. In view of the manufacturing capacity, customer base, and supply chain, Samsung is no longer able to compete with TSMC under any circumstance. (News source: Economic News)
